Do you already know arepas?
Arepas are super delicious little cornmeal patties or pockets, depending on how you shape them, with a variety of fillings. Arepas originate in Latin America and come from Venezuela and Colombia. They are really easy to prepare and all you need is: precooked cornmeal, salt and water and after 5 minutes you can already throw the little dough pieces into the pan.
I also just recently discovered them for myself and have made them quite a few times since, because they are just super quick to make and a great bread alternative. Plus, they’re vegan and gluten-free, so if you’re looking for a bread alternative – definitely check out arepas. For more info on the nutritional values of the cornmeal used, see below. Gracias a mi querida amiga Joha de Ecuador por inspirarme a hacer arepas.
Recipe
- Servings: 1-2
- Duration: 15 minutes
- Level: easy
Ingredients:
- Arepas
- 100g precooked cornflour
- 120g water
- a pinch of salt
- Filling
- Sautéed bell pepper and onion
- Guacamole
- Tomatoes
- Baby Spinach
Kitchen Tools:
- Antistick pan or grill pan
Method:
- Put the corn flour (it is important to use pre-cooked corn flour) and a pinch of salt in a bowl.
- Then add the water and mix everything together.
- Let the dough rest for 3 minutes and in the meantime heat a pan.
- Now form equal-sized balls and shape the dough balls into small patties with your hands. If you want to slice and fill them afterwards, I recommend shaping them a bit thicker. If you just want to put the topping on the arepas, then form thinner patties.
- Now cook in the pan for about 5 minutes per side.
- Let cool and enjoy with filling or topping of your choice.
Buen provecho!

Servings
These little patties are quite heavy, so I recommend 2 per person, especially if you fill them with vegetables or ingredients of your choice.
